In the midst of budget reductions, how can we buy laptops for every 7th grader and how can we afford to build a replacement for Panther Lake Elementary?
The purchase of laptop computers is funded separately through the Technology Levy. This capital levy was specifically approved by district voters in 2006 for technology purchases. By law, these monies cannot be used for operational costs. The two largest components of the current technology plan are laptops and classroom SMART Boards. The current technology levy expires in 2010 and renewal will depend on Kent School District voters in February 2010. The construction of the new Panther Lake Elementary is separately funded through the 2006 Bond Issue, approved by district voters in February 2006. State law requires us to identify bond issue projects before the bond proposal goes to a vote. Statutes also prohibit the use of capital funds for operational purposes. A long-term benefit of this new school will be a reduction of utility and maintenance costs.
