In a typical vehicle this would be the desired velocity that the driver would set for the cruise controller. In the case of Bob, the autonomous vehicle, yet another control system would actually set this desired velocity for the cruise control system. On slide # 11, where the cruise control example is shown, there is also a block diagram (upper right corner). In this diagram the ‘reference’ input represents vdes.
