In the Approved Document B (ADB) are the travel distances compulsory?
A. Travel distances are based upon a combination of experience and best practice and represent the maximum distance a person can reasonably be expected to walk in order to escape from a fire. Although it could not be said that a slightly greater distance would be so unsafe if designing in accordance with the guidance document ADB, designers should aim to keep travel distances as short as possible, rather than designing to the maximum distance as recommended in the prescriptive guidance. However using a fire engineer could provide justification to extend these.
