In terms of image quality, what are the advantages of a digital SLR over a film SLR camera?
In my opinion, there are none. If we consider only the 35mm SLR format and digital SLRs that mimic these cameras in size and capabilities, film technology remains superior to digital technology. I expect that some year digital may catch up, but it’s not there yet. There are a number of factors with digital cameras that limit their image quality, including sensor resolution, sensor size, and control of white balance. Film is a very mature technology that continues to improve with each passing year. The rate of progress has slowed appreciably in the past few years as manufacturers have shifted to the more profitable digital technology.
