The old adage “you get what you pay for” applies here to some extent. Lawyers to charge the minimum ordinarily handle a large number of cases and do not devote significant time to the only case that matters to you, yours. Often times, these bargain basement lawyers will conduct your DMV hearing by phone, insist that you plead guilty and move on to the next case. On the other hand, a law firm charging your $5,000 may be more interested in keeping up appearances by having ultra-posh offices, supernumerary help around the office or the latest model BMW in the parking lot. Such lawyers may truly be worth it, providing they can win your case, but cost alone should not be the determining factor. A conscientious, diligent attorney who truly feels he or she is an advocate for individual’s rights and freedom may work for a far lower fee. Regardless of the fee he or she asks, a lawyer who fits the above profile will likely be a good investment, especially when you consider how much is at stake.
