It’s from a story Spielberg heard from all holocaust survivors that when they were violently taken out of the ghetto’s, most of them remember seeing a little girl in a red coat walking along as if nothing was out of sorts. It’s his way of saying that even when the worst things happen you remember the strangest things.

I have read that book twice now, I think the significance is to illustrate the true horror of what is going on all around the little girl. She is just a little girl wearing a red coat, and she does, to a great degree, seem oblivious to what’s happening around her. In the movie this doesn’t really work. I saw the movie too, and it doesn’t really come across in the movie. It doesn’t work. You really should read the book. The true, cold blooded horror only comes across in the book. I went further and did some research. I was amazed to find out that Amon Goeth was a real person. All his atrocities were real. Everything. So was Diana Reiter a real person ( the Jewish Civil engineer who is executed for complaining that the concrete foundations weren’t correct). She was a real person. A living, real person who just happened to be Jewish. I had nightmares about that scene for days afterwards.
