In other UNIX systems, the command “chfn” allows me to change my “gecos” or finger name. Why can I use that to change the “gecos” of my Campus Computing ID?
We feel that the “gecos” field should properly reflect the account owner’s real name. The only way to restrict what is being used in the “gecos” field is to disable the “chfn” command. You can request that it be changed by contacting the CCID Administrator, 492-0400. We will make changes from one proper name to another (e.g. J. Smith to John Smith or Jane Doe to Jane Smith), but will not make frivolous changes.
