In Newfoundland and Labrador, do the majority of people live in urban or rural areas?
Answer Believe it or not, the answer is that the majority of people live in Urban areas. Because of the soil conditions, the vast majority of the land in Newfoundland Labrador is unable to sustain any economic activity at all except for lumbering and a little hunting. Its not called “the rock” for nothing. Also in the 50s and 60s, the gov’t engaged in a systematic program of forcing people who lived in the smaller outports to move to larger towns along the coast as it was was too costly to supply the smaller towns with essential services such as doctors, schools, electricity, etc.
