In my Living Room, I want all my furniture to sit on a rug, with the exception of tables that line the walls. What size should my rug be, and will I be able to fine a patterned rug that size?

If your furniture sits mainly in the center of your room, with end tables or armoires along the perimeter, then you will make your room look larger if your rug comes out from the wall about 18″ to 2″. You want all your non-moveable furniture to be on wood (or tile) around the room. The furniture in the center needs to be all on a rug. If you have to walk through this room to get to another room, you also want to always be walking on the rug, not half rug and half hard surface flooring. Now, most larger rugs are very expensive, so this keeps a lot of people from purchasing 9×12 or larger, and a lot of rugs just don’t come any larger. One option is to make a rug out of a printed or patterned carpet, and it can then be made any size. Another option is to use a solid carpet, and use the rug area for color only, with pattern in your upholstery and/or window treatments.
