In my AMS-LaTeX article (book), I had to use pagebreak to avoid a bad break, but that left extra space at the bottom of the page. How can I fix it?

• If an explicit page break follows a theorem, proof, list, or similar environment, place the \pagebreak in the last line of the environment. • Vertical space defined to follow an environment will not be removed by \pagebreak. Thus the last line will not be flush to the bottom of the page as desired.
