This is a great question. Many times people forget the many places PHI exists outside of the paper documentation. I have a couple suggestions for you. Often these labels are easily stripped from a prescription bottle and in that case I suggest removing them and placing them in a locked shredding receptacle and then of course these items will be shredded with other paper documents. If they are not easily stripped, a permanent black marker will obliterate the information and protect privacy of PHI.
