In light of the trend towards natural habitats for wild animals held in captivity, does Baylor have any plans to build a larger, more up-to-date, natural habitat for our bears?
For at least two years the Baylor Chamber of Commerce and the University have been considering modifications to the bear program to enhance the mascot’s habitat. These discussions began well before the animal rights activists took up the cause this past summer. The administration is continuing to work with the Chamber and other groups to determine an appropriate and timely way of further enhancing the bear habitat. It is important to keep in mind that Baylor currently meets all state and federal regulations for maintaining an on-campus facility for our live mascots. Furthermore, the bears are under the care of outstanding veterinarians from Texas A&M University who specialize in large animal medicine.
