A. I think Madhukar’s shifting was a huge blow to all of us within the agency. We had become a very cohesive group, and suddenly he was moving out. Of course, we all knew that it was in Madhukar’s best interest, as he was moving into a role of setting up a planning function – which is really his strength and joy. But for a small agency it was a blow, and we really didn’t know what was to happen. So we initially just hoped for the best. But there was also a certain expectancy in the agency once the name of a giant like Rajiv Agarwal was announced. Here was a man who has seen it all, someone who is both an intellectual and a great judge of creative. The first Indian to be selected to be part of a Cannes jury – which showed how he towered over all the creative directors here. Rajiv’s coming helped us take Madhukar’s departure more easily. Unfortunately, Rajiv’s stay with us didn’t last more than eight or nine months. It was a good nine months, however. I personally learnt a lot from him b
