Dr.Seuss used the following reasons: 1-his shoes were too tight, 2-his head wasn’t screwed on quite right, 3-his heart was two sizes too small for why the Grinch hated Christmas as a metaphor to show how ridiculous it is for people to be upset when others are happy. Essentially the Grinch hated the Whos who all had each other during the holidays when he was alone. But once he is redeemed at the very end, everything works out wonderfully.

In the cartoon version and book, they state that noone knows just why, but they suggest three theories 1-his shoes were too tight 2-his head wasn’t screwed on quite right 3-his heart was two sizes too small In the movie version with Jim Carrey, they suggest that it was because when he was a child, his classmates/peers made fun of this special christmas gift he had made for this girl that he really liked.

1) Because his heart was 2 sizes too small 2) Because Christmas was too commercial and overrated, in his eyes 3) He hates seeing other people happy when he’s miserable

Also in the movie what triggered it was he was forced to use a razor and cut himself which caused him to hate everyone.
