In dysphagia by neural causes why its fluid dysphagia only ?
In neural causes of dysphagia there are many issues. By far the most well known of neural dysphagia is cardiac achalasia with failure of relaxation of the cardiac sphincter. Food and fluids accumulate in the esophagus and then when the weight of the retained material is enough it forces the sphincter open by gravity and some food and fluid pass into the stomach. But this is usually not enough to empty the esophagus and a large residue remains giving rise to a progressive dilatation of the esophagus. In other cases there is a defect in the initiation [start] of swallowing at the level of the mouth, tongue and pharynx. Here all types of fodd are affected but once this is bypassed food passes easily. At a lower level,at the upper esophageal sphincter [cricopharyngeus] there is a spasm preventing all types of food as well.(by prof.
