I am an Aussie in Australia and have never heard of anyone going into a desert for hiking or camping. We have many national parks to do so and many people go to the beach for the same. I did hear on the radio a few days ago, that someone has thought up a new golf course, that stretches for over 1800 kms. You start and play your first hole in the desert, then drive the car a hundred kms and play the second hole, some towns inbetween have a proper golf club that is part of that course.
