In a nutshell, whats the difference between the democratic and replublican parties?
Generally, Democrats are fiscal liberals. The Democratic party tends to be more socially progressive, but the number of social conservatives is not insignificant. Generally, Republicans are fiscal conservatives. The party has relatively few social progressives. The great genius of Ronald Reagan (or, you could argue, the way he destroyed the American political system) was that he forged an extremely tight link between fiscal and social conservatism. That is, he managed to get social conservatives and fiscal conservatives to vote in “lock step”. To this day, you get results like the entire Republican party voting against things – while there are relatively few issues in which Democrats will ALL vote one way.
