Improving the literacy and numeracy of young people who offend – where do we go from here?
Organisation/Project title: NRDC, Institute of Education Workshop leaders: Laura Brazier (NRDC, Institute of Education) & Jane Hurry (NRDC, Institute of Education) At the time of the conference the NRDC were soon to be publishing the first of two final reports from a project that aimed to investigate the effectiveness of UK education programmes designed to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of juvenile offenders and examine what impact literacy and numeracy have on economic activity and offending over time. This session began by presenting an overview of the key findings from the first report for comment and debate. Discussion centred on the reports three key areas of activity: • The effectiveness of provision including the projects experimental findings on improving young people’s literacy and numeracy levels. • Improving educational provision including findings on teaching practice. • Young people’s attitudes to education, training and employment and how that may affect engagem
