Im writing a novel manuscript, whats a good number of pages/words to write per day?

Alexander McCall Smith writes 3,000 – 5,000 words a day. Alan Garner averages 14 words a day. Both are successful authors. There is no right or wrong amount to write in a day. It depends on you and your circumstances. I’ve got a demanding full time job and a partner and a house to run. Consequently I simply write when and what I can. Some days, that’s a few thousand words. Other days, it’s nothing. If it works for you to write 2,000 words a day, then fine, but there’s no ‘good target’ to set yourself. Whatever works for you. There are no rules. What I would say, though, is that quality is more important than quantity. I’d rather write 500 words I was really pleased with than 2,000 words that I wrote purely because I vowed to myself that I’d write 2,000 words.
