Most top liberal arts colleges and research universities also have good history departments. You can find a list of some of those at US News. They do rank graduate departments by their specialties, but be careful: students don’t always get the same treatment at the undergraduate level. Beyond that, it helps to go where you’ll find the primary source material. For Revolutionary War studies, I would definitely check out William and Mary: you’ll have access to all the great resources in Williamsburg and Jamestown. Also look at Boston and Philadelphia-area schools; you may be able to compensate for whatever’s missing in their libraries by doing internships with local historical groups.
