As an Audi Technician, I can tell you that the 1.8T is a more reliable engine. I also have driven quite a few of both 1.8T and 2.8 A4s. If you are looking for power, the 1.8T is an easy motor to mod. You could get an APR ECM tune, which changes the wastegate open/close times as well as fuel and ignition maps. It improves power without doing any actual physical engine modification. If you want to go big, APR also offers turbo upgrades and exhaust. Simply replacing the stock K03 turbo with a K04, and an ECM tune can make huge improvements. The 1.8T also gets better MPG and is cheaper to maintain. The 2.8 has some expensive issues to consider. Also, even if you get some sort of warranty on it, many of the 2.8’s common problems will not be covered. As most extended warranties do not cover leaks. Make sure you get a Quattro. As an Audi enthusiast, Audi Technician, and Audi owner, I would go with the 1.8T matched with a Quattro drivetrain.
