Im going to Switzerland for a wedding in August- what do people wear to weddings in Switzerland?
The Christian weddings I’ve been to never required a special dress code, but men usually wear suit and tie (informal attire) and women dress somewhat accordingly. A cocktail dress and heels seem appropriate. In August it can get quite hot even in mountainous Switzerland. Temperatures can rise over 27°C (80°F) up to 30°C+ (90°F), but cold rainstorms in the evenings are frequent. If the wedding’s going to take place higher up in the mountains (or if there’s no luck with the weather), temperatures will be more modest. If you’re not sure what to wear, don’t be afraid to ask. And the golden rule says: better over- than under dressed.
It can get quite ‘formal’ in Switzerland so if possible, I think I’d try to find out what would be appropriate from the principals involved. It can get quite hot in August in Switzerland, especially if you are not up in the mountains, so I’d settle on something reasonable smart (cocktail dress, or a smart pant suit) but plan on having layers so if it goes on into the evening when it could get chilly, you have a wrap/jacket. I’d not wear anything off the shoulder personally, especially if there’s a Church service involved, so a wrap to wear in Church would also be a good idea. Have fun – I envy you.
