The USC Mainframe dialup connection does not use TCP/IP protocol to allow computers to communicate with one another. When you login to the mainframe, you are asked to designate a terminal type, typically TVI950 or VT100. Designating a terminal type only tells the mainframe what terminal protocol to use to transfer information between you and itself. There are no Internet protocols in effect whatsoever. Therefore, an application that relies on TCP/IP protocol, such as Netscape, will not work. In order to use Netscape, you must have a dialup account with a commercial Internet provider and have TCP/IP protocol installed on your computer.
