Driving yourself around Costa Rica for your photo trip is an understandably attractive option. Nonetheless, a high level of Spanish is a very useful skill to have, as Costa Rican road signs leave a lot to be desired. Getting lost at least once is an absolute certainty, and outside of tourist hotels, the vast majority of people do not speak English. Further, having a driver and/or guide will leave your trip logistics in professional hands, allowing you to concentrate on photography.
