I’m confused, why did Lucian sacrifice himself in the end?!
Initially, Lucian was going to be all bad, right until the end, because I was so taken with Ryder that writing any good scenes for Lucian was really difficult. But without writing any good scenes for him I would’ve ended up with a very boring character, which is why I gave him something extra: a weakness. Lily. After four centuries, she was the only one that still made our world interesting to him, so her rejection meant there was nothing here he wanted, nothing that was worth anything to him. No reason to hang on. So he let go. For her, but also for him.
