A. Good question – People often confuse these with a Shadow Box type fence also. We know other Fence companies also use these Fence names interchangably – we don’t know why, perhaps they don’t know the correct terminolgy. We will give you the definitive answer here.1. Shadow Box – Slightly overlapped boards nailed on opposing sides of your horizontal 2×4 framing members. Allows wind to pass thru. Semi-Privacy Type Fence. 2. Board on Board – Standard picket boards are over lapped on each other by 1 1/2″ inches and nailed to each other. Both boards are the same size. Framing can be on 1 side or both sides. Privacy Type Fence.3. Batten on Board – This is the correct name. The design dates to the original days of plank construction. Houses and Barns were built with boards placed side by side. Then the cracks between the planks were covered with smaller width boards called battens. Therefore as the Batten is nailed to the Board the correct terminology is “Batten on Board”.
