A41: Basic RIP does not support variable length subnets i.e. a subnet that does not end on an octet boundary such as 255.255.248.0, hence an alternative is needed and “RIP 2” and “RIP (Extended)” both support this form of subnetting. Not all manufacturers use all RIP variations so we give you all three choices. If you use subnetting that does not end on an octet boundary use either “RIP 2” or “RIP (Extended)”.
