I’m an international student. Do I need to take the English proficiency exam (TOEFL)?
• Undergraduates: All students whose native language is not English must meet the minimum required TOEFL score of 500 (paper-based test) or 173 (computer-based). This requirement is waived only if you have completed a four-year Bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university. • Graduates: International applicants whose native language is not English are required by the Graduate College to submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (or a score of 213 on the computer-based test). Some departments require a higher score; refer to departmental instructions for further information. Score test results are valid for two years from the test date to the proposed semester of enrollment. Applicants generally are not required to submit TOEFL scores if they completed 2 years of full-time, upper division academic study in the U.S. or have received a bachelor’s degree or higher from an institution in the United States, English-speaking Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand.
