Because NetFiles uses SMB/CIFS (see above), it is case insensitive. Therefore, a file named “test.txt” is considered equivalent to “TEST.TXT” or “Test.txt.” However, the Apple file system is case sensitive. Therefore, when a Mac user tries to rename a file from uppercase to lowercase (TEST.TXT to test.txt) or vice versa, the Apple o/s assumes these are two different files and deletes the existing file before moving the “new” file in its place. So, when the only difference between the “old” and “new” filename is a change in case, the “rename” command acts like a “delete” command. As of 11/25/2008, Information Services is actively working with Apple support and our storage vendor to determine if a fix for this incompatibility exists.
