Im 40 years old and considering a change of career. Are firms willing to take on trainees in their forties?
There is a growing trend towards firms taking on mature trainees, so being in your forties should not be seen as an insurmountable barrier. It’s also against the law to discriminate against someone because of their age. However, bear in mind that competition for training contracts is stiff and you’ll have to be highly committed in order to succeed. Think about the types of firms you are interested in and whether you have any relevant experience. Legal work experience will bolster your CV, and you should also include voluntary work and skills obtained in previous careers. Building relationships with local firms, Magistrates Courts or Crown Prosecution Service can be invaluable, particularly if you are looking to remain in the same area. A list of firms and organisations which are authorised to employ trainees is available on the Law Society website. Training contract vacancies are also advertised in the Law Society Gazette.
