Most kinds of glass, except Pyrex, will shatter if exposed to a sudden change in temperature. This means don’t pour hot liquids into cold glass containers and don’t pour cold liquids into hot glass containers. That said, a little common sense goes a long way too. It is never a good idea to place a hot container into a refrigerator without allowing the container to cool somewhat. Why use refrigeration to lower the temperature when ambient air will do the same job for free? On the other hand, it is common to pour hot food into warm or even cool glass containers for canning (the container is subsequently heated) or for refrigerated storage (the container is subsequently cooled). You should avoid freezing liquids in glass containers because the ice that forms can expand and crack the container. Who hasn’t stuck a soft drink in the freezer, to cool it off quickly, and then forgot all about it? I know I have. What a mess that makes!
