If we should legalize gay marraige in the US, why shouldn we legalize polygamy?
Personally if consenting adults want to form a polyamorous union, I think they should probably have the right. The main reason not to allow it is the religious belief of certain people, which appears to be a clear example of violating separation of church and state. There are however real hurdles for allowing polyamorous marriage that do not exist for gay marriages. All the present laws and social structures set up regarding marriage are written with two people in mind. Suddenly allowing any number of adults to claim marriage benefits would create serious hurdles for businesses (regulating spousal benefits), insurance and healthcare providers (the same), government institutions (taxation, immigration, etc), the legal system (divorce cases, freedom from testifying against a spouse), and one and on Choosing to enter a same sex relationship is not significantly different from entering a heterosexual relationship, but polyamorous relationships are clearly a different structure.
