If they’re so hazardous how come it’s taken us 50 years to discover it?
New testing procedures for hazardous waste make it possible to determine if something will be released to the environment that we didn’t know before. These testing procedures were used on electronics only fairly recently to find that they could release lead, mercury and other toxins under landfill conditions. New recycling technologies make it safer to recycle these devices and recover the metals, plastics and glass for further reuse.
