If the U.S. government turned int a dictatorship, who would stop them?
America’s Founding Fathers were very much concerned with the concentration of political power into a few hands, which lent itself to “tyranny” and the violation of individual rights. To them, England and other monarchies at that time–in essence, dictatorships–reflected the dangers of concentrated political power. As a result, the Fathers created a system of government that diffused political power, devolving it as close to the individual as possible. The Tenth Amendment reads: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.” Consequently, if the U.S. government were to turn into a dictatorship, it would have to contend with 50 other “mini-governments”. While the U.S. Government controls most military force, it does not possess a monopoly on it.
