If the sap of the poison ivy plant touches the skin, will a rash develop?
Studies show that 85 percent of the population will develop an allergic reaction if exposed to poison ivy. Sensitivity varies among individuals according to circumstace, age, genetics, and previous exposure. All parts of poison ivy are poisonous, but the leaves are especially potent. Between 12 and 48 hours after poison ivy touches the skin, a red, itchy rash may develop, followed by skin blisters. This condition lasts for up to two weeks. Thorough washing of the affected area with mild soap or rubbing alcohol within five minutes of exposure may prevent a rash from developing. If a rash does form, sponge the area with alcohol and apply a soothing and drying lotion, such as calamine lotion.
