If Teflon is harmful to health, why do they make Teflon coated cooking utensils?
Teflon is not harmful in any normal use. It’s biologically inert, in fact. You could eat a nice big helping of finely-shredded Teflon, and it would pass right through you, unchanged, and with no part of it being absorbed or digested in any way. Only at temperatures well above those normally used for cooking does Teflon break down into substances that can possibly be absorbed into the body. There are some random claims of adverse health effects from breathing fumes from overheated Teflon pans, but there is a serious dearth of scientific evidence to support these claims. In any event, at the temperatures that it takes to break down Teflon, many common food substances also give off potentially harmful fumes, posing a greater health threat than is likely to result from the Teflon.
