Smoking cigarettes does not cause the plaque build up in arteries… Smoking causes arteries to constrict (become smaller)…. plaque is caused by the fat and cholesterol in foods we eat… aging and time cause the arteries to become hardened and less flexible as the plaque also becomes calcified and this process is known as atherosclerosis… the combination of the constricted arteries plus the plaque leads to obstructions (blockages) of arteries which leads to heart attacks, and strokes… Now as for inhalation of smoke… smoke is damaging to the lining of the lungs PERIOD… doesnt matter where the smoke came from…. the substances and chemicals which make up the smoke may be more damaging than others and also the amount and length of time of exposure…. and also the health of the individual’s lungs and their ability to return to normal after the exposure… as well as the concentration of the smoke… for instance… second hand smoke is a risk fa
