If selecting the option to attend a Non-DoD School, does the school need to be accredited?

Both accredited and non-accredited schools may be selected by the sponsor. Normally, an accredited school would be the best choice; particularly, for grades 9 through 12. Students in grades 9 through 12 may be at risk of credits taken from a non-accredited high school not being accepted by a college or university for admission purposes. Some states may accept it at face value, some may require a placement test, and some may refuse to accept it. Note that these limitations also apply to homeschooling. Due to the fees involved, however, accreditation may not be sought by all schools. This does not necessarily mean an accredited school provides better instruction than a non-accredited one. If possible, it is a good idea to check with the next school that the student will attend, if that is known.
