If Obama becomes President and doesn live up to expectations. Will it hurt race relations in America?
No — supporters will claim sabotage and detractors will claim ineptitude and things will be no better or worse than they are now. Too much baggage and blame prevent any open discussion of race and I cannot see changes occurring in this situation by a sudden reversal of attitudes. We already have a number of members of all races in prominent political positions and we will just have to be patient. Embracing hate speeches can severely retard this progress, however, and we should, as a society, have zero tolerance for hate speeches– no matter the target or attempted justification for them. I think that race relations will slowly improve as race distinctions disappear (which they are in the process of doing). But I also think that Obama’s significant inexperience will make the Presidential possibility very remote. I will certainly not vote for him because of his inexperience and lack of preparation (not because of his race).
