If its cheaper for the City of Sacramento to send garbage to Nevada, why wouldnt it save money for us to do that as well?
According to a recent consultant study which evaluated a number of waste management options, it would be more expensive for the County to export garbage to other landfills. This is due to the need for the County to cover fixed costs at the landfill that would not go away if the facility were closed. The combination of Kiefer Landfill fixed costs, transportation costs for garbage, and disposal at a different landfill would exceed the current tipping fee cost at Kiefer Landfill. In addition, the Board of Supervisors has made a policy decision to not export waste to other jurisdictions. They have chosen to maintain a local solution to a local problem – the environmentally safe disposal of waste. The City of Sacramento has no obligation to pay the Countys fixed costs at Kiefer Landfill. Further, the City built a transfer station which reduced travel time for routes and started shipping garbage to a landfill in Nevada.
