If installed outdoors in cold environments, will the sight glass of CorrView ® crack and leak if frozen?
A. Freezing presents a serious threat to any water filled pipe, vessel or device such as CorrView ® – which functions as part of a water filled environment. Up until its front wear surface is worn away, no water exists within its interior of CorrView ® and therefore no possible freezing threat exists. Once the unit is worn through and water enters its sealed cavity, that water inside CorrView ® will freeze if the assumed heat tracing and other measures provided to the pipe fail, and repair service is not rendered within sufficient time. Under testing for such a freeze-up scenario, a slight air gap inside CorrView ® prevented any damage due to freezing, as the gap would allow the water / ice to safely expand. When completely filled with water and frozen, the tremendous pressure of the expanding ice actually bulged out the thinner dimension of the front wear surface while leaving the sight glass in place and undamaged.
