If increasing take-up of school meals is the key to solving financial problems in school meals services, what can local authorities and schools do to increase take-up?
• There are many case studies on The School Food Trust website which give details of how local authorities and schools have increased their take-up, including free school meals. We are continually adding to these. Case studies include marketing strategies and partnership working across organisations to promote school meals. • “A Fresh Look at the School Meal Experience” is available here and booklets will be sent to every school. The booklet gives many ideas for improving the meal experience for pupils, and therefore increasing the uptake of school meals. Many of these ideas are not expensive. • Some LAs are having success with ‘invest to save’ measures. It is widely acknowledged that there is no quick fix and the increase in take-up will take time and involve determination and commitment from a range of partners – it is everyone’s responsibility.
