If i went on the lighter life diet would i lose weight with an under active tyroid?
The lighter life diet is a pretty extreme way of losing weight. I am diabetic and did the Cambridge diet, which is very similar to lighter life, but half the price, for 1 1/2 weeks, and lost weight, although most of it at that stage would’ve been fluid loss, as the way in which the diet works is by putting you into a starvation mode, and initially all you lose is fluid. As someone with hypothyroidism, you would need to be referred or given the all clear by your GP (if you are in the UK) before commencing the diet. As a nurse, I don’t really agree with the lighter life/cambridge philosophy – it can put a lot of strain on the body, and some people can experience pretty nasty side effects. I believe the idea of the diet is to stay on it for life, otherwise, when you come off it and start eating normally again, the weight can be very quick to go back on. Regardless of other health problems. Basically, in my experience, I tried the diet as I needed a real boot up the jacksie to get me on a
Lighter Life, that’s the one that’s been in the papers recently because people have been dying on it. If you truly have an under active thyroid you need to be on proper NHS medicine for it. Then you won’t have to worry about needing diets specifically for your thyroid problem. If you’ve just decided you must have an under active thyroid as that can only be the reason for your weight problem, then you’re in denial and no diet will help you.
You need a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) test. Its a simple test to let your doctor know if you really have an underactive thyroid. If you do, its very simple to treat. You receive a prescription for synthetic thyroid. Once you start your medication, your doctor will monitor you to see if you are on the right dose. It usually takes a while to find exactly the right dosage, but this depends on what the blood tests show. Go ahead, start your diet. Your thyroid will catch up with you. Good luck.
