If I upgrade to the XR machine will I be able to record on all 24 tracks at 96khz or will I still be loosing tracks?
No matter which model you get/have, at the two highest resolutions (88.2kHz and 96kHz) you are restricted to 12 tracks at one time. This is due to the rate at which an IDE hard drive can send/receive information. The only alternative would have been to devise a special drive made by Alesis, and then you wouldn’t be able to go to any BestBuy or Kmart to buy a hard drive that will work in your HD24. So, if you stop and think about it, you’re not losing anything !!!
