If I unlock the cover, and then release the spring loaded lock handle and let go of the cover without holding on to the strap, will I damage the cover?

No. Located in the front is a “bracing bar” that goes across the entire front of the truck bed (behind the canister) where the handle will hit the striker plate as usual without any damage to the cover or the canister. The bracer bar protects and keeps pressure off of the canister at all times.
