Unlike Window$, Linux is happy to share a computer with other Operating Systems. When you install Linux, it should give you a suggested disk layout that will keep your Windows partition and all the data. Linux will also install a boot manager (Called GRUB) that will give you a choice of Linux or Window$ when you boot. I would still take care to back up any valuable data because mistakes and problems can and do happen. If you ever decided to rebuild your computer, remember to ALWAYS install Window$ first as it will format any non-Window$ partitions from any disk it is installed on.
