If I chose to edit an existing keyboard mapping, can I save the changes to another keyboard map, or does it automatically save the changes to the file I used?

You can click on the new button and then create a filename for this mapping. You then have a copy of the default mapping under a different name. Any subsequent changes you make after doing this you can save to your new keyboard map file.
