If funding bodies are paying higher prices for research grants, will the volume of grants they fund decrease?
A. Possibly for some sponsoring bodies. Research Councils should fund the same number of projects, as the Government has agreed to deploy additional resources of £120 million p.a. from 2005/06 (increasing to £200 million p.a. from 2007/08) to Research Councils. This is to enable them to fund a higher percentage of research costs for the projects they fund at each HEI whilst maintaining the same volume of projects. Government departments and charities may have to reduce the number of research projects they fund if they have to support each project at a level closer to its full economic cost. However, the long-term effect of fEC on the volume of projects funded will probably not be known until financing and managing projects on a fEC basis is fully established by both the funders and Universities.
