If formative assessment helps teachers to identify learning difficulties of studentsthen why should it form part of the students evaluation when learning is still informative stage?
The National Policy on Education (1986) emphasizes that at school level, evaluationshould be formative or developmental in nature. At this stage, the child is in formativestage of learning. She/ he wants to discuss and clarify many doubts for betterconceptual clarity. Unless we assess learner’s efforts, performance, attitudes tolearning and abilities to apply what is learned in every day situations, we may not beable to help him/ her in improving his/her learning. Hence through formativeassessment, causes of poor performance are diagnosed using diagnostic tests andpromptly remediated by giving interventions followed by retesting.
