If First Nations want four year terms and a better election system, couldn they just develop their own community election code as the AFN and the Senate Standing Committee on Electoral Reform have suggested?
That is certainly an option. However, many First Nations in Manitoba and the Atlantic have expressed support for a legislative framework which is not subject to continual change and different interpretations. Many would prefer a standard process by which to elect their leaders which would not entail developing a community custom election code.
